OCTOBER 4 – DECEMBER 2024
Street art is considered as one of the largest art movements in modern times. It became very popular as an ongoing, fast growing global form of art. From sprayed graffiti to monumental painted murals covering entire buildings, it appeared in urban areas and public locations. Site-specific ‘exhibitions’ continue to dominate the trends in the art world.
Through the ages humans used existing surfaces as ‘canvases’ to paint on. Handprints and symbols were found in prehistoric caves documenting their everyday life and traditions. Many years later (after using art on ceilings, walls of churches, and palaces), starting in the 1930s, artists painted graffiti on big city walls, marking ‘gang territories’.
Around the same time, we see murals popping out and changing city-scapes in South California, Philadelphia, and New York City, developing a sense of political and cultural identities.
