PATRICIO RODRIGUEZ

“My practice is an ongoing quest to give form to the ideas and emotions that arise from my experience of the world and my place within it. Each work is both an echo of the past I carry, and a premonition of the path ahead, created as I believe, with divine permission.” —Patricio Rodriguez

Trained as an engraver at the prestigious Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba, Patricio Rodriguez brings the rigor and precision of traditional printmaking into a deeply personal language of cut paper. The millenary discipline of Chinese paper-cutting, which Rodriguez approaches with profound reverence, is a foundational presence in his work. However, he reinterprets this traditional technique through a contemporary lens.

Paper is his primary medium; the blade and time his instruments. Through these implements, Rodriguez develops a distinctive structural vocabulary in which fragility itself becomes both material and concept. He constructs delicate yet resonant architectures of light, shadow, and meaning. Cutting, layering, and sometimes combining paper with oil on canvas and other elements are Rodriguez’s signature style.

At the heart of his imagery are the human figure and its natural surroundings, dreams, and aspirations alongside fears and limitations. His silhouettes and compositions celebrate the luminous, hopeful, and joyful dimensions of existence, even as they acknowledge life’s inherent vulnerability. In addition the work is at once playful and enigmatic. They embody what he sees as art’s highest calling, to capture the zeitgeist and to affirm the quiet triumph of miracle over misery.

Through meticulous craft and conceptual daring, his practice seeks to transform the ephemeral into the enduring. In conclusion, he invites viewers to pause, look closer, and discover in fragility a profound strength. Rodriguez has exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Museo El Blanqueo, Art Basel Miami, and the Kendall Art Center, which is now known as the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas.
